The Protester's Covenant

The Protester's Covenant was created during the Civil Right's protest lead by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr..  Using a format of 10 points, similar to the 10 commandments, it was a requirement that all protestors sign before marching.1

  1. Meditate daily on the teachings and life of Jesus.
  2. Remember always that the non—violent movement seeks justice and reconciliation — not victory.
  3. Walk and talk in the manner of love, for God is love.
  4. Pray daily to be used by God in order that all men might be free.
  5. Sacrifice personal wishes in order that all men might be free.
  6. Observe with both friend and foe the ordinary rules of courtesy.
  7. Seek to perform regular service for others and for the world.
  8. Refrain from the violence of fist, tongue, or heart.
  9. Strive to be in good spiritual and bodily health.
  10. Follow the directions of the movement and of the captain on a demonstration.

Although no specific author has been credited with the creation of these 10 points, it is likely that Dr. Martin Luther King was one of those contributing to its construction.

Slate.com has already identified these ten points with TEA Party protestors2.  No evidence emerging from the organizers of any of the TEA parties suggest that this has been adopted by them.  Glenn Beck, often viewed as a leader of the protest movement did recommend to his audience that they "take the pledge."3

Questions to Answer:

  • What was the significance of this document?
  • How was this enforced?
  • Who were the original authors?
  • How many people signed it?
  • When was it authored?   Can this be placed on the timeline?
  • Are there any TEA Party groups who have formally adopted this?
