PLUMB MARTIN, Joseph, Yankee Doodle Boy: A Young Soldier's Adventures in the American Revolution Told by Himself (ISBN 978-0823411801)

This book is a narrative story of Joseph Plumb Martin (November 21, 1760 – May 2, 1850) who was an American Revolutionary War soldier in the 8th Connecticut Regiment of the Continental Army. The original account of his adventures were published in 1830. Although several years since the war had elapsed Martin's account remains a primary source for life among the ranks of the Continental Army. Errors of names etc appear throughout all of the current published versions, and various editors acknowledge these with their own style.

This particular version of Martin's narrative is among the easiest to read. With a large font and condensed narrative, this book moves quickly from one event to the next. This increased pace limits the ability of the author to become accustomed to Martin's particular narrative style honed over years of telling his stories. Those unaccustomed to early 19th century narratives will find this an advantage in helping them gain their bearings on the trials and events of the Revolutionary War.

This book is recommended for young adult readers and up. It is a fine gift to present to those currently serving or considering service in the military.
